1 West Mount Vernon Place, the Walters Art Museum’s 19th-century mansion, opens on Saturday, June 16 after a multi-year transformation.

Situated in the heart of Mount Vernon, 1 West will offer visitors exciting new ways to experience the Walters’ renowned collection in one of Baltimore’s most distinctive buildings.

Admission to 1 West Mount Vernon Place and the Walters Art Museum is free.

An Architectural Masterpiece

The Walters approached 1 West Mount Vernon Place as a work of art in its own right, creating a new experience of the building and art inside. The project showcases the building’s striking interior features, such as the grand spiral staircase, Tiffany stained-glass skylight, and Baccarat-style chandeliers.

The $10.4 million project was supported by the State of Maryland, the City of Baltimore, and the France-Merrick Foundation, Leo and Anna Belle Sirota, Baltimore County, Martha Ann Peters and other generous donors, and received a Best of Maryland award from Preservation Maryland.

The Walters Collection in New Ways

On the first floor, the installation explores the building’s history, the people associated with it, and its connections with Baltimore. Nineteenth-century paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts are featured, as well as new works commissioned by the Walters from ceramicist Roberto Lugo.

On the second floor, refreshed galleries create new spaces for temporary installations. The inaugural installation celebrates the Walters’ collection of ceramics from around the world—from the oldest object in the collection to the most recent—and explores an array of ceramic materials and techniques.
